Why should smokers and obese people only have to pay the same medicare withholdings as a healthy nonsmoker?

Trena K asked:

When in the breakroom with my bottled water and fruit, I see these horribly obese slobs chewing down on junk food. And smokers puffing away on their quest for lung cancer. And I’m thinking why don’t they have to pay more into the medicare system? They will be using it when the fatsos get diabetes and the smokers get cancer.

Shouldn’t we people who try to take care of ourselves get a discount?
Being fat and smoking are both choices.

Lose weight now – Stay slim forever

You sound very intolerant of others. Your question is even condescending of those who smoke and who are fat. That is not a good trait to have. And the answer to your question is “no”.

BTW – I am 58, fit and healthy.

    Need to lose weight?

Well then anybody that has diabetes run in the family should have to pay more. As well as anyone with family history of heart disease.

Should people with an obsessive compulsion to ask the same question at the same time everyday have to pay higher medicare with-holdings since they will obviously need serous and expensive therapy in the future?

Why aren’t you locked up for using bottled water that will sit in landfills for a bajillion years? You are nothing but a Nazi who can tolerate no one but your own selfish little interests. When will they come and cart you away because you eat fruit? THINK you idiot!

Are you being prejudice against smokers and overweight people?

That’s not very tolerant of you.

    To answer your question, no.

    How to Lose Weight

The smokers are paying more, although not into Medicare. Have you seen the federal and state taxes on a pack of smokes lately? What are your state legislative members spending the tobacco taxes on? California banned all smoking in bars and restaurants and still collected over $120 million just in tobacco taxes. Where do they spend it?

    Need to lose weight?

    Good points raised already.

Also should blacks be charged more since they carry sickle cell and are more prone to heart disease than any other race?

Should women be charged more since “Women’s issues” are an additional cost to thier normal healthcare?

Your point seems to fall apart when you Actually think about it instead of just going on “Your feelings”

Edit. So by your justification HIV and AIDS should definatly cost more and probably shouldnt be covered by healthcare since they are going to die anyway. In most cases HIV transmission is a choice with the exception of rape and childberth. Are you going to tell all the AIDS patients that they are never getting healthcare because their choice to have unprotected sex?

    Slim down – remove fat

You want a discount because you eat fruit and drink water?

What about those who drink too much alcohol that are more likely to get liver disease?

Or those who drive too fast that and are more likely to get in a car accident?

Not to mention the Billions of other behaviors people have that may make them high risk, should we charge all of them more?

Are you sure there’s nothing you do in your life that would make you one of those more at risk and should also be charged more then the rest?

    Lose weight, Lose Fat

And now you understand the fault of government ran healthcare…..the government will have even more power then to stop what it believes to be “unhealthy” regardless of individual and body rights.

Let’s put it this way….would someone want a pro-lifer politician in charge of abortion policies for the single payer insurance plan (IE government ran healthcare)?
