Calorie intake?

spannerjockey02 asked:

Hi guys.
Im just wondering if anyone could tell me the reccomended calorie intake for a 21yr old female, and a 25 yr old male? My fiance is about 10kg overwight, and wants to lose it, so we are trying a low calorie diet. I know that our bodies require a certain amount to run itself, but as to what that amount is I have no idea. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Sorry guys, should have added that Im 164cm tall, weigh 58kg. Im of small build and I exercise everyday. I follow a good diet due to the fact that I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome..so I avoid sugar and high Gi foods. My Finace is about 187cm tall and we estimate him to weigh about 100kg, if not a touch more. He’s a strong, stocky build, and had recently given up smoking, hence the reason why we think he has put on weight, around his belly mainly. He is a mechanic and does fairly physical work.

your only 21. Just stay at 1500 and you will lose weight. Stay at 2000 and if you are moderately active, you will lose weight. 1200 is to low unless your looking for 2 pounds a week to go away. you get 500 less a day. You lose a pound a week. 3500 calories in a pound. 500 less a day. one pound a week. Good Luck!

It depends on metabolic rate but an average person with an average metabolism leading an average life will use 42 calories an hour (female) or 52 calories an hour (male) just doing nothing. Onn that basis an average female needs about 1000 calories a day just to keep ticking over and a male needs about 1250.

Because we don’t spend 24 hours a day doing nothing we need approximately double that amount to maintain equilibrium (i.e. food in = energy used). For a an average female you’re looking at 1600 to 2100 calories a day and an average male between 2400 and 3000 calories a day.

As your fiance isn’t much overweight it would be prefereable to engage in a little more exercise each day rather than changing diet. Not only will that added exercise loose the pounds but he’ll be fitter as well.

Those numbers can vary from 1500 to 3500 (bigspan, huh). To really answer that question you have to tell us how tall you are, small, medium or large frame and what you currently weigh as well as what your current activity level is, then you can get a pretty reasonable estimate. Any number anyone gives you without knowing these things is a gross over-generalization.
