What can you do with an obese person encroaching on your space on an airliner?

Charles H asked:

I recently boarded a plane for a 3-hour flight when a very obese woman approached her seat next to mine. She raised the armrest between us and sat down, with a considerable amount of her heft pushing uncomfortably down on me, without so much as an “excuse me”. I got out of my seat and approached a flight attendant to explain the situation and ask about getting another seat. She informed me that the plane was booked to capacity, but for $80 I could upgrade to business class. Well, HELLO, I’ve already paid over $300 for my seat, and I don’t remember agreeing to share it with somebody who’s spilling over into mine. I just had to endure this for the duration of the flight. Is there some other course of action that the airline (or I) should have taken in this situation?

    Losing weight without starving yourself

In the future You can always say something to the obese person about their spillage and possibly get them mad and then they will pay the $80 for the upgrade. I would call the airline and complain. You may want to research their policy concerning such issues. I am quite sure other people have had the same problem.

    How to Lose Weight

Nothing you could have done I’m afraid, although I know for a fact some airlines will charge the price of 2 seats for severely overweight people (don’t have any airline names though).

One thing I would recommend though is for you to contact the airline’s customer support team for possible compensation. Send them a written complaint explaining what happened on the flight, be polite and expose the facts as they happened. Explain you were extremely distressed and did not have an enjoyable flight at all. Follow up on it a few weeks after you sent it and take it from there :)

    Lose weight fast

I would have asked the woman to put the arm rest back down. If she asked why, I would have told her that I’m unconfortable with it up. Simple as that.
