How to skip the weight loss plateau?
Bee asked:
Up until about three months ago, I’ve been relatively inactive. I have a lot of muscle from strength training, but I didn’t do a lot of cardio because of my asthma. I started biking for ~40 minutes every day on a low resistance but high rpm to increase my cardio but avoid gaining muscle mass. I’ve been consuming a balanced diet of 1200 to 1500 calories a day (about the amount of calories I’ve always consumed, I just began eating healthier foods). I lost 6lbs in the first month, then plateaued for a while and now I’ve gone back up 5lbs. Why am I gaining the weight back when I haven’t changed anything? How can I lose weight? I want to lose at least 10lbs by the summer. That will bring me to a healthy BMI.

Oh, and I’m slightly limited in my exercises right now because I have a separated rib. That’s why I’m just biking for now.

Losing weight without starving yourself
Plateaus aren’t bad. When you’re in one, you are still “shrinking”—take your measurements. You’ll see.
The “weight” you’re concerned about may not be an issue. You are replacing fat with muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat.
You’re very wise not to overdo while your ribs heal. Keep up the good work. Perseverence will bring you to your goal.
