Why are there so many OBESE people who blame their problem on genetics?

gordongecko asked:

First gluttony is a sin so I find it ironic that so many religious people (especially women) are obese.

Secondly the majority of obese people do not blame themselves for their problem they blame genetics.

Last time I checked eating at fast food restaurants and sitting on the couch wasn’t a genetic predisposition.

Yes some medicine (for unrelated diseases) may cause you to become obese but I read somewhere that only 1 in 100 obese people were that way because it wasn’t their fault.

I haven’t hate at a fast food restaurant and I exercise nearly everyday. Is that because I have good genes or a strong will?

It is time health insurance companies started charging people based on the choices they make. If you choose to be fat you will be a burden on the health care system and deserve to pay more.

As a Canadian our health care (tax dollars) pay for fat people to have surgery. It costs 38$ thousand dollars.

FAT PEOPLE NEED SOME TOUGH LOVE NOT SYMPATHY.
It looks like I asked the wrong people.

I always thought fat people were jolly but those who answer my question are pretty angry.

Psychotherapy: get some before it’s too late. Your prejudices likely extend far beyond those related to body size.

If I thought for a moment that you would be able to open your ears, I would explain it. But your mind is made up, so I will not waste the time. Maybe someone else will.

Agreed. Genetics only causes dumbasses like yourself. You must come from a long line of dumbasses.

    Fastest Way to Lose Weight

First off this is a horrible way to think….for some over weight people it is really hard to maintain or lose weight. Most don’t truly want to be that way anyway. You seem like a really heartless person and very immature to say the things you have said. I hope you get fat someday and then you’ll know how it feels.

Hmmmmm. Well, I suppose it makes them feel better. It’s got to be awful being so overweight.

BTW, having no compassion and being so critical is a sin, too. I bet you yourself have a few flaws. I’m thin, but that doesn’t make me better than anyone.

You might benefit from doing something good for others. Really.

    How to Lose Weight

people dont eat healthy because they dont know what is good for them, and because they dont know what is good for them, as far as they are concerned, it could not possible be what they are eating.. hence – they blame something far simpler, genetics or they say ‘i am just big boned’.

If it’s not my fault, it’s not my responsibility to correct. That is the attitude of many obese people. It’s the same as an alcoholic or drug addict blaming everyone else but not theirself.

First of all let me say that some overweight people do make poor choices in their eating habits, but that it their choice. And yes they may eat fast food or they may eat a little more richly than you, but that is not gluttony.
Secondly, the rate at which your body burns fat (aka your metabollism) is based on genetics. You can change your metabolism only a small bit, but in the end, if you have low metabolism there is not much you can do about that.
Thirdly, many people gain weight as a result of medicine. It may not be the entire reason that makes them gain that much weight, but it is a factor.
As for other reasons a person could gain weight…
An illness that doesn’t allow a person any mobility.
    Depression or other mental illnesses.
There are many reasons a person could be overweight, none of which you really know or understand. And in many cases, health insurance does not pay for “fat people to have surgery” unless it is the last resort because it is a very risky surgery and many doctors like to exhaust all their options first.
And as a last note, I must say that you sound very insensitive, and need to get off your high horse. I am now at the perfect weight for my height and age after having gained a lot of weight due to medications, and how I got to this point was very difficult. It takes a lot of motivation once you have gained the weight to get up and exercise (esp for me because I had an injury to boot), and there is more to it than just people being lazy. There is very much a mental aspect to it, and many people who are overweight and trying to lose weight need to receive counseling to overcome their problems.
So to you, I say, stop getting mad at people who you don’t know, and whom you know nothing about just because you think what they are doing is a sin. And get off your dang high horse.

    Slim down – remove fat

Wow, I can’t believe how many people are defending obesity here! While I agree with you, I think you are being a little harsh. We live in an age where everything we want is given to us on a deep-fried platter, and it takes absolutely no effort to be entertained, travel somewhere, or eat a meal. There are lots of reasons why people are fat; a very small percentage are actually fat because of “genetics” or a condition that doesn’t allow them to feel full like others. For some people, it could be a medical or mental thing like hypothyroidism or depression, and for others it is simply a matter of putting the tv and burgers priority over the exercise and fruit priority. So yes, you are right! But still….let’s play nice! lol

What can I say? You are corrct. I just got back from a couple of months in Japan and Korea. Two countries that have wealth but don’t overeat and walk everywhere they go.

You can only gain weight if you consume more calories than you burn. There is no other way.
