Do the children of obese parents fall victim to obesity themselves?

Les T asked:

I am completing my study for my PhD in sociology and have primarily focused on the west coast. Of the 13,463 families I have interviewed at a variety of locations 73% of obese parents have children that are obese. I find that hispanics have the highest parent to child obesity ratio at 87% and asians have the least at 32%, Now, I want o quiz folks to get their impressions and comments to see if this is an awareness issue.

I don’t think so.. if my parents were obese, and they had a lot of health issues, I would try NOT to be like them.

    Usually.
Considering the overweight children in my son’s grade, their parents are overweight. When I see overweight parents with children in public, the children are usually overweight, too.

    Some do, others not.
I would hope seeing their parents in such a condition would encourage them not to engage in the same habits.

    Losing weight without starving yourself

No. I was raised by my mom who was 5′8 and like 280lbs. Now she is 250 lbs. I was also raised around her best friend who was 5′8 and like 350+? lbs. I am 5′8 but have always been in shape. My average weight is 125-130lbs. When i got pregnant in 2006 i went up to 180 lbs. but then 1 1/2 yrs l8r, i went down to 120 lbs. Now i’m back to 130, yeah. I think it is affected by not just DNA but psychological, as a child i was raised around the heavy set and didnt want to be like them. but every other weekend at my dads he fed me healthy food and took me outdoors a lot. I always prefered his way of eating and activity and have his body shape.

Yes, the parents feed them as much as they eat themselves.

    Fastest Way to Lose Weight

    “Fall victim to Twinkies” maybe.

It’s fat parents overfeeding their fat kids who sit in front of the tv or video games all day instead of going outside and playing like we used to.
It’s also the hormones in milk and meat, TV dinners, and high fructose corn syrup.

When I was a kid (I’m 40), McDonalds was a rare treat, not a daily event. None of us had weird peanut allergies, none of us were fat. We’d go ride our bikes, jumprope, run around the playground, etc. And Mom fed us a meat, a starch, and a veggie in reasonable ‘kid’ portions for dinner. For lunch, we had a brown bag with a PB&J, a little bag of pretzels or goldfish crackers, and milk. Sometimes a pudding cup. Then we go run around some more.

I’m not sure when the whole world went fat and lazy….

Unfortunately, obese parents usually pass their problems to their children. Pin Up Doll was right. When I was young there wasn’t much to do inside. Riding our bikes, catching frogs and snakes, climbing trees, looking for fossils, running and playing were what we did every day. I don’t remember very many obese kids or parents.
